What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a convenient method of providing orthodontic treatment that involves using a series of clear aligner trays that gently straighten your teeth over time. The trays are personalized for a comfortable and secure fit and provide a discreet option that's ideal if you're looking for a more aesthetically-pleasing way to straighten your smile.

Our Invisalign treatments also help to cut down on visits to our dentist and provide other benefits like being able to take them off while eating. This eliminates the need to modify your diet or use special tools to clean between brackets and wires. The treatment relies on wearing the trays for at least 22 hours a day, and straightening your smile usually takes between 12-18 months, depending on your situation.

Is Invisalign a Good Option for Me?

Invisalign is a versatile orthodontic option that can help in many situations. If you are experiencing negative impacts from any of the following issues, you may be a great candidate for clear aligners:

  • Crowding
  • Crooked teeth
  • Unwanted gaps between teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Painful bite

Our dentist will take the time to thoroughly evaluate your overall dental health and listen to your smile goals to ensure Invisalign will be an effective option for you. If you've had braces in the past and your teeth have shifted, Invisalign can also provide an excellent path forward for retreatment.

Our Invisalign Treatment Process

We'll perform a thorough dental exam when you come in for your initial consultation. When we determine whether clear braces are the best way to straighten your smile, we'll take highly accurate impressions of your teeth and send them to a trusted dental lab. The dental lab will use these impressions to carefully create a series of customized clear aligner trays that will be used in sequence to straighten your smile over time. Once the aligners arrive, you'll return for a follow-up appointment where we fit your first set of trays, ensuring comfort and providing care tips.

Caring for Your Invisalign Clear Braces

Caring for your Invisalign clear braces is a vital part of ensuring your treatment succeeds on every level. We give you all the information you need for successful treatment at home. Some important care instructions include:

When Eating & Drinking: Your clear aligners should be removed when eating and drinking anything other than water. Beverages and food can get caught in the trays and cause issues like discoloration and foul odors. Furthermore, eating and drinking with the aligners can damage them, reducing their effectiveness. Being committed to brushing your teeth after each meal is also an important way to avoid getting food particles stuck in the trays after you put them back on.

Cleaning Your Aligners: You should rinse your aligners with water before putting them back on any time you take them off, and the trays should be washed and cleaned at least once daily. The best way to clean them is with clear, unscented antibacterial soap and a toothbrush with soft bristles. You should then thoroughly rinse the soap off before putting the trays back on. Using hard-bristled toothbrushes or toothpaste can damage the trays.

Keeping Aligners Safe & Secure: Clear aligners are small and translucent and can be easy to misplace if you're not watching them closely. That's why we recommend putting them in a case every time you take them off for any extended period, like meals or when you're performing your oral hygiene routine. This will help you to avoid losing them or accidentally throwing them away. If you lose a tray, you should continue wearing the previous set until our dentist can replace it.

Maintaining Your Smile With Retainers

Retainers are important tools for maintaining and protecting your results after orthodontic treatment. Wearing them as recommended by our dentist will help to ensure your teeth remain straight for as long as possible. After Invisalign treatment, we use Vivera® or traditional retainers customized and designed to fit your new smile precisely. When your treatment ends, our dentist can consult with you about how long and how often you will need to wear your retainer.
